Finally – some good news about area housing!
Habitat for Humanity Lakeside and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans dedicated a recently completed home in Plymouth, Wisconsin. Plymouth, Wis (January 18, 2010) –Times are tough economically. There’s no doubt about that, especially in Sheboygan County. That hasn’t stopped Habitat for Humanity Lakeside and local members of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans from completing construction on a home with a family in urgent need of one.
On December 20, 2009, volunteers, Habitat for Humanity representatives, Thrivent Financial representatives and members, Mayor Don Pohlman, and, of course, the excited partner family were gathered at 239 Bishop Avenue to honor the hard work, the generous financial backing and the community support that made this home possible. A brief program was held including presenting of the key to the homeowners, tour of the new home and light refreshments. The homebuyers—Welsch Family —are more than a little eager to move into their new home. They have completed 532 hours of “sweat equity” helping to build the home, a basic tenet of Habitat for Humanity. They will repay the no-profit mortgage over a period of 30 years, illustrating Habitat for Humanity’s objective to give families a “hand up” rather than a “hand out.”
Steve Mannchen, affiliate President, stated, “The volunteers, donors, and other supporters who attended the event recognize and celebrate the positive change this home brings to the family and the community. On August 22, 2009 this was a vacant lot. It took 37 days, 484 volunteers and 2542 volunteer hours to create what you see today. I especially want to recognize Bob Hartig for his 248 volunteer hours and Steve Ugoretz with 160 hours and numerous other volunteers with over 50 hours dedicated to the construction of this home and Lisa Reed for keeping all of our volunteer slots filled. Credit also needs to be given to our business supporters and congregations who provided volunteer teams of employees and members during the week and on Saturday, especially Johnsonville who provided volunteers on 4 different build days. The contributions and support of our sub-contractors was amazing! Last but not least Jim Hanlon, Construction Site Supervisor, needs to be commended for pulling all these groups together. We wouldn’t be standing here today dedicating this home without each and every one of you.”
The new home, located at 239 Bishop Ave., is a result of a partnership between Habitat for Humanity International and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Called Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity, this partnership has resulted in more than 2,000 decent, affordable homes across the country and around the world since 2005.
